INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE  NLS MUN, 2009

The Law and Society Committee and the Organizing Committee of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, one of the foremost legal educational institutions in South Asia, is proud to bring to you its first edition of the National Law School Model United Nations 2009 (‘NLS MUN 2009’). The MUN will be held from 5th December to 7th December, 2009.

ABOUT THE MUN: The NLS MUN – the first of its kind in Bangalore promises to set the bar high in terms of sheer MUN quality in its first edition itself. The new agendas with interesting topics will ensure a high level of debate with extensive qualitative and substantive support from secretariat staff in form of well researched study guides which will also cater to first time MUN participants. The focus of the NLS MUN 2009 is on intense and solid debate with a view to generating real solutions.

WHY NLS MUN?: The quality of the MUN aside, this MUN comes with prize money of Rs. 1 Lakh and great socials such as an MUN night at a reputed club in Bangalore and the MUN opening and closing dinner.

The NLS MUN promises to be the best collegiate MUN in India in terms of background preparation, committee sessions and quality of debate as well as the social events and prize money.

COMMITTEES: The NLS MUN 2009 shall have 4 committees in its first edition. The 4 committees shall be the United Nation Secretary Council (UNSC), the United Nations General Assembly, the International Criminal Court and the Joint Crisis Cabinet Committee.

CHAIRS: There shall be a national selection process for the appointment of Chairs for the NLS MUN. The selection process will have no reservations and will be solely on the basis of MUN experience, the criteria and format for which have been sent with this invitation. There is a prize for the Best Chair for the Chair who conducts best committee sessions and stimulates engaging debate and runs their committee well. All applicants are requested to mail their applications to nlsmun2009@gmail.com with the subject line being “Chair Application – name of Individual/Institute.”

REGISTRATION: The NLS MUN has a reserved cap of about 120 delegates that it will accommodate in its first year. Thus, institutions are requested to book their slots immediately.

However, please note, that delegates will be selected on basis of their applications based solely on MUM experience, the criteria for which has been attached to this invitation letter. Thus, an institution can combine the applications of all its applications and send us a compilation of applications or individual candidates can mail us in their applications at nlsmun2009@gmail.com with the subject of the mail being “Delegate Application – Name of Individual/Institute.”

A nominal registration amount will be charged for accommodation and food for the delegates for the duration of 5th-7th December, 2009.

Hello Debaters!

This is to inform you that the NLS Debate 2009 is slated to be held from
28th November to 3rd December, 2009.

The debate will be a 3-on-3 Asians style parliamentary debate with a main
as well as a Novices break. This year we are looking to make this a bigger
event that last year's edition and in furtherance of the same we have a
stunning CA panel consisting of:
1. Sharmila Parmanand (Chief Adjudiactor AUDC 2009,  Adjudicator Semi-finals WUDC and finals of the Australian debate at Monash 2009)
2. Bhavya Khanna (WUDC Breaking Team 2006)
3. Yaman Verma (All-Asians Winner, 2008, broke at AUDC 2009)
4. Prabhat Kiran Mukherjea (13th Best-Speaker at All-Asians, 2008; broke
at AUDC 2009)
5. Kalrav Mishra (Winner of several national debates including MukMem at.
St. Stephens, 2009)

We also have Vipul Nanda (DCA of St. Xaviers Debate 2009) as our DCA
Oberver for this tournament.

We intend to give out prizes worth Rs. 1,00,000/- including prizes in the
Novices break and multiple adjudicator prizes, so hurry and register now!

Registration opens NOW and each institution can register a maximum of 2
team (3 speakers each) with an n=1 adjudicator registration by sending a
mail to debate@nls.ac.in or invites.nlsd@gmail.com. The registration will
be open for the first 80 teams that register.

provides detailed information about the debate, registration process and
the fees and contact numbers.

The IIT Literary things

The National Law School of India University are proud to present, once again, the annual Literary and Cultural Fest, Le’Gala as well as our ever popular rock show, Strawberry Fields.

 

Le’Gala includes several cultural events such as choreography, eastern music, western music, street play, movie spoof and fine arts events such as painting and sketching to name a few. The literary segment included fun-filled quizzes such as What’s the Good Word, 20 questions, JAM and our crowd-pullers such as Open Quiz and Entertainment Quiz. The 3 day event with stunning prize-money also has other attractions such as our Informal events with funky prizes such as dinner coupons to some of the best eateries in Bangalore, gift-vouchers from stores across the country and ofcourse, our ever reliable food stalls with many cuisines to choose from!

 

Strawberry Fields, our prestigious and acclaimed rock show, now in its 13th edition has launched many a popular bands such as Antaragini (now a Raghu Dixit project), Mojo, Kryptos, Rainbow Bridge, Zero, Junkyard Groove, Bhayanak Maut. Thus, this promises to be the best outing for all rock fans!

ENCOPINION or ‘The Debating Competition’ provides a platform to sublimate your thought in the most explicit manner and speak your mind comprehensively on the topics at hand. This event not only shows the thought process of the participants but more than that tests the oratorical skills of the speakers!

But over the past years we have realized that debating competitions becomes a bit boring after a certain duration of time so this time instead of the normal form of the competition we present Encopinion in the exciting PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE form!

Rules and Regulations are as follows:

  1. The competition this time is the exciting parliamentary form of debate.
  2. The debate is based on the 2 on 2 format that is each team will consist of 2 participants.
  3. The teams registering for the event will be divided into different pools.
  4. There will be a preliminary round wherein the teams in each pool will have to face each other and will have to debate on a given motion.
  5. 1 speaker from each team will be invited to present his/her views on the given motion and his speech is open to interjections from the opposition teams.
  6. At the end of the preliminary round the names of the top 5 teams qualifying for the finals will be declared and the same procedure will be repeated in the final round but this time both the speakers will have the opportunity to speak.
  7. The time limit for each speaker will be 6 minutes which will include the time taken for the reply speech.
  8. The topics/motions will be given on the spot and a time of 15 minutes will be provided to the teams to concatenate their ideas and speak either in support or against the motion.
  9. At the end of the final round the name of the winning team will be announced by the judge/moderator.
  10. The decision of the judges or the moderators will be final and binding.
